Human Controller

Has no mouth but speaks, has no hands but touches, has no life but breathes, what is it? Answer: media.

In every waking moment of our lives, we use media –we watch the television, listen to radios, read magazines and newspapers, yet, we simply neglect its power.  One of the most powerful things in today’s time is media. It has greatly influenced our lives. It helps us make a decision, may it be the kind of soap to use, what car to buy, food to eat, movies to watch, or who to vote as president and so on. A famous line from Spiderman says, “A great power comes with a great responsibility”. The media may be a source of many positive implications as to every aspect in human development, however such cases like human trafficking and phishing is still present –thus, the great power of media must be used appropriately in order to avoid such events.

One of the positive impacts of media is its promotion of citizen journalism. It encourages mundane individuals to let their voice be heard. Many people have so much to say, yet suppressed because of the fear of simply speaking out. So, what they do is they let their written works talk for them. They get a pen name or post their works anonymously over personal blogs. Consequently, it also helps build a strong belief system and teaches people to be opinionated enough without sounding dogmatic and snotty. However, just like everything else in this world, some things just go off the positive side of the tree –it can also develop problems such as making the dissemination of fake news and the prevalence of biased articles easier. Another can be going against the libel law. The libel law states that anyone who disdain, bring into disrepute or dishonor a person publicly shall be punished under Article 353 of the Revised Penal Code (Attorneys of the Philippines, 2017).

Another use of media that plants positivity is the ability of it to advertize tourism. Through the help of internet, a less costly way of advertizing local tourist spots can be achieved. Picturesque sceneries can be uploaded over the internet with inviting captions to entice people to come and visit the place. Since the internet can be accessed anywhere in the world, the post can reach many people and might just cause excitement to the global village which can lead to possible robust of tourism. However, photos taken must not be manipulated to deceive people. It must be kept genuine, although minimal enhancements will be okay. Articles about the place must also not be exaggerated that it may already wax poetic lies in the heads of people.

Human trafficking is any form of illegal employment, using people by means of business transaction as if the person is simply a commodity that can be traded off by money (UNODC, 2018). According to the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (2012), 27% of all the victims were identified to be children, two-thirds of which are girls. More than half is trafficked for the use of sexual exploitation and about 36% is for forced labor. From 2007 to 2010, it has been reported that majority of the victims were trafficked across borders and others were trafficked interregional. In today’s time, human trafficking has been made easier since one click on the internet can immediately disclose information about a person. The most prominent portal of this lies to the social media platforms. These social media platforms cater all the information needed in order to capture a potential prey. A different thing in line to this is phishing. Phishing is the act of tricking people by sending emails containing false information to gain access to account passwords or pins (TechTarget, 2017). Thus, this yet again, puts to show that the internet can be a channel of fraudulent actions.

To avoid such repulsive events to happen, what we can do is be very mindful of our internet wanders. We must be wary of the things that we will post online and observe tact when expressing an opinion. Consequently, being a media and information literate can be helpful to minimize such incidents. Let us all keep in mind that the media is our digital mouths that could influence the minds and touch the hearts of people. It is a mere object yet it is as if alive, manipulating our every decision. It controls us –frightening but true.

UNCERTAINTY

Looking at you hurt
But not seeing you kills me inside
You tame my aching heart
But insanity wakes when you’re by my side
This confused me a lot
Are you right for me or not?
I don’t know yet
But I’d like to bet
Even if it fills my pocket with uncertainty
I’ll wait for my answer, patiently

May tinatawag tayong unang wika, ikalawang wika at ikatlong wika.

ABM Students Survival 101: Tips and Guides

Many might think that Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) students get it easier but boy, were they wrong. ABM students might not have precalculus and all the other heavy Math and Sciences, but they have specialized subjects that gives them equal stress. So, here are some tips and guides for all those struggling to survive ABM, and also for the ones that would want to pursue it.

1.    Stay Motivated!

Keep the positivity within you; it helps a lot! Do not lose hope because that will just put you over the cusp of failure and misery. Staying motivated means having the will to do things; think about your goal or reason why you chose ABM. Block all the negativity and have faith!

Motivation is the key ingredient towards success; not intelligence or wealth, because what will a person with intelligence have when he cannot even motivate himself to make use of his knowledge? Also, a well-off person who is indolent will eventually lose all of his wealth.

2.    Be organized!

ABM classes require plenty of applied lessons hence, there will be many performance tasks given. So, it is advisable to get your organizing skills to their fullest! Planners and sticky notes will serve as your best friends. Take note of all the stuff you have to do, and do it before hand to avoid cramming.

3.    Manage time!

You do not want to be one of those zombie-looking students walking in the hallways, do you? To avoid that, learn how to manage your time appropriately. Make a list of things that must be done then, number it according to their deadlines and importance.

Do not sacrifice your health over your studies. Yes, education is important but health is wealth. Thus, leave an ample time to eat your breakfast and have at least 8 hours of sleep.

4.    Have time for yourself; have fun!

It is good to know your priorities, but do not take away the youth within you. You are young, have fun! Make some friends and socialize. Do not drown yourself on school work, because the most important part of being in high school is the memories and experiences. Do not steal that from yourself.

School is not all about getting knowledge and earning high grades, in order to get a high paying job in the future. It teaches you how to live; how to make friends, how to approach different scenarios in the future, and how to love the world and appreciate yourself.

5.    Get a study habit; befriend those numbers!

This is yet the most obvious one; get a study habit! Do not study only when you have a test tomorrow, because that will only cause you to cram and the results will most likely be terrible.

ABM requires a lot of precision, memorization, and analysis –which is why you really have to constantly read your notes and practice solving. It will be a big help to befriend your calculator; get to know the keys and its functions. Subsequently, make an outline of your lessons, write it down; writing will help you remember. Also, drink lots of water when studying to keep your body hydrated. But remember these are just some study techniques; all students are different, some learn differently so these might not work. Just look for a technique that works on you.

6.    Secure a best friend!

What is high school without a best friend? I mean, who will listen to the whines you have about this annoying course work, or the latest gossip about this cute guy in class? Your best friend will help you get through the day. Your best friend will help things seem easier, and the world a lot happier.

High school is the foundation of good friendships. This is where you get to know some of the most important people of your life. So, treasure and do not waste the opportunity of finding your partner-in-crime!

Positivity is always the key. Thinking that it was perhaps a wrong choice will definitely not help and can even worsen the case. Love your choices and make the most out of it. Do not regret about being in the ABM strand, instead embrace the possibilities and enjoy the uncertainties. Do not live your life in regret, it will only bring you down and lead you to failure. Love the life you live, so you can live the life you love!
